A new Chicago spa sets out to green your beauty routine

When Jenny Perillo set out to open Chicago’s first eco-friendly and non-toxic spa, she did so with one objective in mind: She wanted the Marc Jacobs’ chemical-free version. A self-confessed “eco glam girl,” Jenny, through her Lincoln Square spa Noktivo
(4831 N. Damen), has been greening Chicagoans’ beauty routines since opening shop earlier this winter.
Just steps below Damen Avenue, Noktivo is a sundrenched little space awash in bright, cheerful colors. Offering manicures, pedicures, facials, makeup application, and—coming soon—a blowout bar, this new beauty spot certainly doesn’t skimp on its services.
“I try to shop from my own backyard first and foremost before venturing out to other states. Being green encompasses so much and I look for companies that are conscious of their carbon footprint.”
What you will
find missing at Noktivo are synthetic chemicals—things like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, formaldehyde, toluene, and many other ingredients that are potentially harmful to both you and the planet.
“We’re a lifestyle spa,” says Jenny. “But there’s no judgment here. We’ll talk with you about the ingredients in your personal care items, but we’re not overbearing.”
A veteran of the beauty industry, Jenny’s interest in green beauty emerged while at the helm of a mobile spa. Visiting clients in their homes for on-site pampering, Jenny became very conscious of the products she was toting with her.
“I didn’t want to bring anything toxic into their houses—they don’t have the proper ventilation for it obviously. So, I went green in that aspect, but I also went green for my own health and to make a greater impact on the environment,” Jenny says.
These days, many of the products Jenny is using—and selling—at Noktivo are vegan, vegetarian, organic, gluten-free, and always as natural as possible. The shelves are stocked with beauty items that are as luxe and impeccably packaged as they are eco-focused and natural. When sourcing products, she looks for chemical-free alternatives that are plant-based and use concentrated botanicals for the highest efficacy. As a bonus we love, Jenny says that 75% of the lines Noktivo uses are made right here in Chicago.
“I try to shop from my own backyard first and foremost before venturing out to other states,” she explains. “Being green encompasses so much and I look for companies that are conscious of their carbon footprint.”
With Mother Nature giving us the cold shoulder this winter, we asked Jenny for expert advice on weathering through until spring. Her answer? “Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. The biggest skincare tip we forget in winter is to stay hydrated by drinking water. Aside from that, be sure to use a good moisturizer that’s going to be a bit more emolliating and have essential oils that penetrate the skin instead of just sitting on top of it,” she advises. “And invest in a good serum—something that will nourish the skin and work to reverse some of the effects of aging and environmental damage.”
