Effortless, enviable style for any day of the week
We first met Marie Elliott, the face and creative force behind the blog, So What if I Like Pretty Things
, amidst blaring car horns and congested street traffic on a stifling summer day. Marie, rolling suitcase stuffed with outfits in-hand, arrived fresh off the Fullerton bus, cheerful and ready to work. A true Midwestern attitude, if you ask us. We led her around the city, from Lincoln Park to Ukrainian Village, asking her to share with you three of her signature looks. Lucky for The Urbaness, she obliged.
With a style that’s at once effortless and enviable, Marie offers up wearable inspiration to help you get dressed for any occasion. “The best tip I have for choosing outfits is to be who you are, and to do it with the knowledge that you can be anything you want. It’s become my personal style motto,” says Marie. Her looks mix equal parts down-to-earth, bohemian, and glam—and it’s precisely this playful approach to style that has us so enthralled. Read on for details and photos of Marie’s style favorites for a date night, girls’ night, and a weekend in the city.
“Mixing a feminine pink lace dress with tough shoes and an asymmetrical herringbone motorcycle jacket is the perfect balance I want to strike on a date,” says Marie. “It lets the suitor know I am sweet, but you probably shouldn’t mess with me!”

Marie takes on a ‘50s-inspired look for a night out with the girls. Skinny black pants off-set the sweetness of a cream, lace shell—and a top-knot, cherry-red lip, and wing-tipped red pump add that classic get-noticed flair. For Marie, the key to a perfect girls’ night look welcomes spontaneity: “My heels are low enough that I can dance on a bar if the mood strikes,” she says.

“There’s nothing more comfortable or chic,” says Marie of her broken-in boyfriend jeans. For a weekend brunch with friends, or a Saturday spent running errands, Marie adds a loose cuff to her denim to showcase an attention-grabbing shoe—bringing her waist-down look from ordinary to anything but. Her rainbow-hued plaid is a playful nod to the classic fall staple, and the necklace, reminiscent of a tie, adds another level of stylish interest.
